A Phone Call Straight From Heaven

On February 7th 2011 (4 hours after Josh left for Canada) we received a phone call from our case worker. A birth mother that we had met with back in November had chosen us to be the parents of her precious baby boy. She was due on the 24th of that same month.
For the rest of that week, Josh and I used up a month's worth of minutes talking to each other, our caseworker, insurance agencies and our mothers. It was quite a roller coaster, bringing moments of terror thinking this might not happen due to insurance issues. But everything fell into place as if it was all meant to be, because well, it was!
There were some health concerns that had come up for the baby from some ultrasounds. They showed he had an enlarged heart and kidney. The lasting effects and causes of this were unclear. Naturally, this made me nervous (I'm a worrier) but Josh felt like he would be all right. When I was still, so did I.
On Thursday the 10th, I met with our beautiful birthmother, her mom and her older sister. I was kinda nervous, having to go alone, as Josh was still in Canada (we decided it was best he stay out there before the baby came so he could stay around longer after we brought him home). Our meeting went so well. It was just as comfortable as our first meeting months earlier.
Josh FINALLY got home on Wednesday the 16th. He being the awesome guy he is, stopped by the agency on his way home and...surprise! We had a meeting there that afternoon that I had forgotten about. So I dropped everything and jetted up there to make our meeting (and to see my husband for the first time since receiving the news) and not only was my hottie hubby there, but our beautiful birthmother! What a great surprise!

The next day we met for lunch: Josh and I, our birthmother and her mom. Her sister was our waitress so we got to see her too. Once again we had a great time and left there saying how amazingly lucky we are to have such a wonderful birth family (cause they are ALL awesome!)
There were rumors of inducing on the 22nd but it wasn't until a week later, on March 1st that the induction actually began.

Josh and I arrived at the hospital at 2 am Wednesday morning (March 2nd) and slept on the couch until 7 am when we snuck away for some breakfast. We got back around 8 and sat and talked with our birthmother's dad until Liam was born at 9:08 am. 7 lbs, 12 ounces and 20 inches long. Thirty minutes later we got to meet him for the first time. It was amazing. He is beautiful! And although we still have some tests to do, Liam is a healthy little boy.

It was a wonderful and emotional day. We got to spend some good time with Liam and his birth family. We met with his birthfather and his mom and even got to see my mom at my brother's house after he picked her up from the airport. I think we pretty much passed out by 9 pm (running on only 3 hrs of sleep). In a lot of ways it seemed like a dream. After 7 years of marriage and over 3 years since starting our adoption journey we have a son. It seemed too surreal and perfect to be true. A song keeps coming to mind. It's called "The Gift We Could Not Give Each Other." It is part of a suite of adoption songs. Anyway, the verse goes like this:
More than we can ever say, our hearts give thanks to heaven
Every time we hold this child, we feel we hold the world
Words will never be enough to share the way our family feels
And with every breath we breathe we want to tell that girl
Not a day is ever through 'till we thank the Lord for you
And a sweetness lingers here in our hearts and thoughts and prayers
You gave more than just one life, when you made of this man and wife
A father and a mother
When you gave the gift we could not give each other
You have have changed our lives forever
Only you and God above could give the gift of love we could not give each other
